New Zealand is known for its incredible landscapes and, being a collection of islands, it also has some beautiful beaches. These are incredibly varied having been impacted by various geological activity that makes the beaches around the islands unique. This list, while not wholly comprehensive of all the best beaches of New Zealand, highlights the unique types of beaches you can visit and the ones we recommend exploring.

Best Beaches of New Zealand Along Lakes

While not the nicest sand, these lakes and lakeside beaches have beautiful views and refreshing water.

Te Anau (Fiordland National Park) In Warm Weather

South Island

Southland

Te Anau is the main town that people stay in when exploring Fiordland National Park and is considered the gateway to the park. The lake itself is beautifully surrounded by mountains and on warm days, it can be a picturesque place to take a dip in the cool lake water and enjoy the surroundings.

Queenstown Beach

South Island

Otago

The beach in the town center of Queenstown does not have the nicest sand. However, it is the perfect place to take in the sunset. You will find many people sitting along the edge of the lake eating dinner or ice cream while watching boats navigate the lake as the sun go down behind the mountains.

Abel Tasman National Park

South Island

Tasman

This national park on the north side of the South Island has a more moderate climate and is the perfect place to find tropical white sand beaches and crystal clear turquoise blue water. These really are some of the best beaches of New Zealand. You can hike, kayak, and camp within the park, allowing you to take advantage of the secluded beaches and beautiful weather during the summer.

Oriental Bay Beach

North Island

Wellington

Urban beaches are very special and a great way to take a break from city life. Oriental Bay Beach in Wellington is great if the weather is warm and not too windy. The beach is quite large with views of the docks and the city skyline. In nice weather, you will find locals and tourists alike taking advantage of the sunshine and cool water.

Hot Water Beach

North Island

Waikato

Hot Water Beach is one of the best beaches of New Zealand and especially unique because of the hot water that rises from the sand. Here, during low tide, people come with shovels and dig large holes in the sand that get filled with hot water from the ground, making personal hot tubs. The water is heated through geothermal forces beneath the ground and can get burning hot so be careful when digging.

The best way to get around New Zealand to explore these different beaches is by renting a car.

Best Beaches of New Zealand with Black Sand

North Island

Auckland

Piha Beach and Muriwai Beach are two black-sand beaches located a short drive from the city of Auckland. Not only is the sand remarkable but the waves in this area are very attractive to local surfers. Head to these beaches to relax on the unique sand, watch people catching the waves, or join in for a fun day of surfing.

Whale Bay

North Island

Northland

Whale Bay is a beautiful secluded beach with calm water located near Manapouri. To reach it, you will park at the top of a hill and hike your way down. The beach itself has white sand and trees that provide shade from the brutal New Zealand sun, making it one of the best beaches of New Zealand.

Best Beaches of New Zealand on Small Islands

These are a few islands that are easily accessible from the North Island to explore for a day trip or an overnight experience.

Waiheke Island

North Island

Auckland

The Waiheke Island located just off the coast of Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf is a popular wine area and a perfect place to visit for a day trip. The island has beautiful beaches (Oneroa Beach and Onetangi Beach) along with a variety of wineries that could be explored over a day.

Bay of Islands

North Island

Northland

This cruise tour of the Bay of Islands takes you around various islands within the bay where you will have the chance to spot different wildlife, see rock formations, and stop at various beaches. The tour visits islands that offer great places to lounge at the beach or hikes to explore the area. Overall, boating around is a great introduction to the Bay of Islands and an opportunity to relax on the beautiful beaches.
