New Zealand is known for its incredible landscapes and, being a collection of islands, it also has some beautiful beaches. These are incredibly varied having been impacted by various geological activity that makes beaches all around the islands unique. This list, while not wholly comprehensive of all the best beaches of New Zealand, highlights the unique types of beaches you can find throughout and the ones we recommend exploring.
Best Beaches of New Zealand to Not Skip on Lakes
While not the nicest sand, these lakes and lakeside beaches have beautiful views and refreshing water.
Te Anau (Fiordland National Park) In Warm Weather
Te Anau is the main town that people stay in when exploring Fiordland National Park and is considered the gateway to the park. The lake itself is beautifully surrounded by mountains and on warm days, it can be a picturesque place to take a dip in the lake and enjoy the surroundings.

Queenstown Beach
The beach in the town center of Queenstown does not have the nicest sand. However, it is the perfect place to take in the sunset. You will find many people sitting along the edge of the lake eating dinner or ice cream while watching boats navigate the lake and the sun set.

Abel Tasman National Park
This national park on the north side of the South Island is the perfect place to find tropical white sand beaches and crystal clear turquoise blue water. You can hike, kayak, and camp within the park, allowing you to take advantage of the secluded beaches and beautiful weather.

Oriental Bay Beach
Urban beaches are very special and the one in Wellington is great if the weather is warm and it is not windy. The beach is quite large with views of the docks and the city skyline. In nice weather, you will find locals and tourists alike taking advantage of the sunshine and cool water.

Hot Water Beach
Hot Water Beach is a beach with hot water that rises from the sand. Here, during low tide, people come with shovels and dig large holes in the sand that get filled with hot water from the ground, making personal hot baths. The water is heated through geothermal forces beneath the ground and can get burning hot.

Best Beaches of New Zealand with Black Sand: Piha Beach and Muriwai Beach
Piha Beach and Muriwai Beach are two black-sand beaches. Not only is the sand remarkable but the surf in this area is very attractive to local surfers. Head to these beaches to relax on the unique sand and watch people catching the waves.

Whale Bay
Whale Bay is located near Manapouri and is a beautiful secluded beach. To reach it, you will park at the top of a hill and hike your way down. The beach itself has white sand beach and trees that provide shade from the brutal New Zealand sun.

These are a few islands that are easily accessible from the North Island to explore for a day trip or an overnight experience.
Waiheke Island
The Waiheke Island located just off the coast of Auckland is a popular wine area and a perfect place to wander for a day trip. The island has beautiful beaches (Oneroa Beach and Onetangi Beach) along with a variety of wineries that could be explored over a day.

Bay of Islands
This cruise tour of the Bay of Islands takes you around various islands within the bay where you will have the chance to spot different wildlife, see rock formations, and stop at various beaches. These are great places to lounge at the beach, hike around the island, and relax within the Bay of Islands.
