New Zealand is known for its incredible landscapes and, being a collection of islands, it also has some beautiful beaches. These are incredibly varied having been impacted by various geological activity that makes beaches all around the islands unique. This list, while not wholly comprehensive of all the best beaches of New Zealand, highlights the unique types of beaches you can find throughout and the ones we recommend exploring.

Best Beaches of New Zealand to Not Skip on Lakes

While not the nicest sand, these lakes and lakeside beaches have beautiful views and refreshing water.

Te Anau (Fiordland National Park) In Warm Weather

Te Anau is the main town that people stay in when exploring Fiordland National Park and is considered the gateway to the park. The lake itself is beautifully surrounded by mountains and on warm days, it can be a picturesque place to take a dip in the lake and enjoy the surroundings.

Queenstown Beach

The beach in the town center of Queenstown does not have the nicest sand. However, it is the perfect place to take in the sunset. You will find many people sitting along the edge of the lake eating dinner or ice cream while watching boats navigate the lake and the sun set.

Oriental Bay Beach

Urban beaches are very special and the one in Wellington is great if the weather is warm and it is not windy. The beach is quite large with views of the docks and the city skyline. In nice weather, you will find locals and tourists alike taking advantage of the sunshine and cool water.

Hot Water Beach

Hot Water Beach is a beach with hot water that rises from the sand. Here, during low tide, people come with shovels and dig large holes in the sand that get filled with hot water from the ground, making personal hot baths. The water is heated through geothermal forces beneath the ground and can get burning hot.
