Part of the New Zealand Travel Guide
← Back to New ZealandThe central North Island New Zealand region sits directly on top of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, an active stretch of geothermal activity that runs from the Bay of Plenty down through Tongariro National Park. It is the reason the ground steams in central Rotorua, the reason Lake Taupo exists at all, and the reason this part of the country looks unlike anywhere else you will visit.
Lake Taupo, which is often described as being roughly the size of Singapore, was formed by a volcanic eruption around 1,800 years ago that was one of the most violent in recorded human history. That same volcanic activity is what makes the region so rewarding today, from the geothermal parks and hot springs around Rotorua to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, which is widely considered the best day hike in New Zealand.
Rotorua is also the cultural center of Māori New Zealand, and it is the best place in the country to learn about Māori history, art, and traditions directly from the communities that hold them. Between the geothermal areas, the cultural experiences, and the hiking, this is the region that gives you the most variety in the fewest miles.
Below is what you need to know about how long to spend here, when to visit, and how to plan around the Tongariro Crossing, which is more weather dependent than most visitors expect.
