Chilean Lake District Travel Guide

The Chilean Lake District runs roughly from Temuco south to Puerto Montt, and it is the part of the country Chileans themselves take their holidays in. Glacial lakes sit beneath a line of near-perfect conical volcanoes, several of which are still active. Villarrica vents gas and smoke continuously, visible as a glow after dark, and locals treat it as scenery rather than as a warning.

Two areas anchor the region. Pucón sits at the foot of Villarrica with hot springs, national parks, and a volcano you can climb to look down into the crater. Puerto Varas sits further south on Lake Llanquihue beneath Osorno, with black and white timber buildings left by nineteenth-century German settlers and a food culture to match. From Puerto Montt, a short ferry reaches Chiloé, an island with its own mythology, stilt houses built over the water, and wooden churches assembled without nails.

This is also where the Mapuche presence is strongest, and it shows up in the food and in the towns themselves. In Villarrica you can search for a Mapuche restaurant on Google Maps and find local Chilean places serving sopaipilla and cazuela, because the integration is strong enough that there is often little distinction between the two cuisines.
