The city was inspired by European architecture and culture, with Beaux-Arts facades, wide boulevards, and a cemetery in Recoleta that is full of history and character. However, what Buenos Aires does with that inheritance is entirely Argentine, and you feel that difference almost immediately.
The neighborhoods are distinct enough that you can spend several days here without covering the same ground twice. San Telmo has the cobblestones and the Sunday antiques market, Palermo breaks into sub-neighborhoods full of murals and restaurants and parkland, and Recoleta is formal and monumental. La Boca is bright and heavily touristed, and we would recommend a short visit rather than a long one.
One thing worth knowing before you arrive is that the city keeps different hours than you are used to. Dinner rarely starts before ten, and the night goes on from there. If you plan your days around that rhythm rather than fighting it, you will get to feel the energy of the city.
