Chilean Lake District Travel Guide

The Chilean Lake District runs roughly from Temuco south to Puerto Montt, and it is the part of the country Chileans themselves take their holidays in. Glacial lakes sit beneath a line of near-perfect conical volcanoes, several of them still active. Villarrica vents gas and smoke continuously, visible as a glow after dark, which locals treat as scenery rather than warning.

Two towns anchor the region. Villarrica and neighboring Pucón sit on the lake of the same name, with hot springs, national parks, and volcano hikes within easy reach. Puerto Varas sits further south on Lake Llanquihue under the Osorno volcano, with black-and-white timber buildings left by nineteenth-century German settlers and a food culture to match. From Puerto Montt, a short ferry reaches Chiloé, an island with its own mythology, stilt houses over the water, and wooden churches built without nails.

We have been here in both summer and fall. Summer brings lake swimming and the busiest stretch of the Chilean calendar. Fall turns the forests and empties the towns, and it is the version we would return for.
