The Top End is the part of Australia that feels least like the rest of it. Darwin sits closer to Jakarta than to Sydney and behaves accordingly, running on a wet season and a dry season rather than four, with a population that reflects how close it is to Southeast Asia. The city itself is small and tropical and functions almost entirely as a base for what lies outside it.

Three parks do the work here. Kakadu, three hours east, is enormous at about 7,600 square miles, holding wetlands, escarpment country, and rock art that has been maintained across tens of thousands of years. Litchfield, ninety minutes south, is compact and full of waterfalls you can swim beneath, which makes it the easiest win in the region. Nitmiluk at Katherine is a gorge system best seen from the water. Nearly everyone reaches these on day trips or short tours out of Darwin, which makes the choice of operator unusually consequential here.

The one thing to understand before you arrive is that saltwater crocodiles inhabit essentially every waterway in the Top End, including freshwater rivers far inland. The rule is absolute: swim only where a sign says you may. Plenty of places are safe and signed, and closures happen without warning, so check current conditions rather than relying on any guide. Below are the guides for Kakadu, the day trips from Darwin, and choosing a tour company.
