Part of the Argentina Travel Guide
← Back to ArgentinaSouthern Patagonia is the reason most people put Argentina on a list. Three places carry it. El Calafate is the base for Perito Moreno, one of the few glaciers on earth still advancing, close enough that you hear it calving before you see it. El Chaltén is a small town at the foot of Fitz Roy, built almost entirely for hikers, with trailheads that start at the edge of the street. Ushuaia sits on the Beagle Channel as the southernmost city in the world, with Tierra del Fuego National Park at its door.
The distances are the constraint. Buenos Aires to Ushuaia is three hours by air and two days by bus, and the towns down here are far apart from each other too. Bus travel between them is comfortable and reliable, but it consumes days.
We have traveled all three, and the pattern is consistent: the weather turns without warning, the season is short, and the accommodation books out months ahead for December to February.
