This is high, arid, Andean terrain with a culture rooted in indigenous heritage rather than European immigration, and the food, music, and architecture all reflect it. It feels closer to Bolivia than to Buenos Aires, which it is.
The Quebrada de Humahuaca is the centerpiece, a UNESCO-listed valley running north from Jujuy past a string of adobe villages. Purmamarca sits beneath the Cerro de los Siete Colores, a hillside layered in genuine bands of red, ochre, green, and violet. Further on, the Salinas Grandes salt flat spreads white and flat at over 3,000 meters.
Salta city is the base for most of it, and one of the more attractive colonial centers in the country. We drove the Quebrada from there, which is how we would recommend doing it.
