← Back to ArgentinaMendoza is Argentina's wine capital, and the altitude is what makes it distinctive. Vineyards here sit between roughly 800 and 1,500 meters, with some in the Uco Valley higher still, producing the intense Malbec the region is known for. The Andes stand behind all of it.
The bodegas divide into three areas. Maipú is closest to the city and the easiest to reach by bike or taxi. Luján de Cuyo holds many of the older, larger estates. The Uco Valley is furthest out, highest, and where much of the most interesting recent winemaking is happening. Each is a different kind of day.
Mendoza is more than wine, which is the part people miss. The Alta Montaña route climbs west toward the Chilean border past Aconcagua, the highest peak outside Asia, and it is one of the best day trips in Argentina.
